Spiritual Mindedness Romans 8:5-8 December 13, 2009
Introduction I. God is not just concerned with our outward behavior. He weighs the motives and intentions of our hearts. The trademark of a born again believer is being spiritually minded.
Exposition with Application For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. I. We are transformed by the renewing of our minds (Rom. 12:2) as we strive to bring every thought under captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). II. The carnally minded person is incapable of spiritual thoughts because he is spiritually dead (Eph. 2:1). Carnal means fallen man’s sinful nature. Carnally minded is a thought life be dominated by our fallen sinful natures. III. Spiritual mindedness is a thought life patterned according to the New Covenant (Eze. 36:26-27). It is to the things of God and hate the things of sin and ungodliness. The carnally minded person can be very religious, but he is never motivated by love for the God revealed in Scripture. IV. The spiritually minded person A. Finds his greatest comfort and contentment in God B. Evaluates everything in his life in terms of his relationship with God. V. The carnally minded person measures everything by the sensual pleasure he receives from them. V. True spiritual mindedness springs up from a principle within (John 7:38), because he is motivated by love. V. True love doesn’t need a jump start from outside to get going. VI. The spiritually minded person walks by faith. The most important person in his life is someone he has never seen: the Lord Jesus Christ. VII. A carnally minded person will have thoughts about salvation and eternity, but they will be intermittent and temporary. His thoughts always return to their normal channel: the things of the world. VIII. The thoughts of a spiritually minded person will be taken up with the things of this world from time to time. But his thoughts invariably return to his relationship with God and his love for Christ.
Application I. While we pray for the ministry of the Holy Spirit to enable us to be more spiritually minded, we are responsible for cultivating spiritual mindedness. A. By studying the Scriptures and hiding them in our hearts. B. By meditating on the outworking of God’s providence in our lives. V. God strengthens our faith by both the afflictions and the blessings that come our way. C. By giving thanks as we watch for the answer to our prayers. V. The spiritually minded person can never truly enjoy a blessing until he has given thanks. II. Thanksgiving contentment are hallmarks of a spiritually minded person. They are the opposite of covetousness and carnality. V. The spiritually minded person is certain that God is working all things together for his eternal good. III. The power to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil is the birthright of the born again believer. But to be more than conquerors, we must first be spiritually minded.
